Basic Computer Literacy Benchmarks

Benchmarks you may find useful when identifying needs and selecting possible remediation for your students: Suggestions are welcome.

The student can or will be able to:

  1. identify computers versus other technology (VCR, fax machine, copier)
  2. identify computer hardware (System Unit, monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer)
  3. turn on a computer

    Mouse and Desktop

  4. move the mouse and see the pointer move
  5. select objects on the desktop
  6. identify objects on the desktop
  7. double click objects on the desktop
  8. click, hold, and drag to display selection rectangle
  9. click, hold, and drag to select multiple items on the desktop
  10. right click and arrange and lineup items on the desktop
  11. double click to open (an application, a folder, or a document)
  12. identify the task bar
  13. use the task bar to expand windows
  14. use the Start button and navigate through cascading menus
  15. use the Start button to launch programs

    Ergonomics

  16. adjust a chair for horizontal forearms typing and mouse posture.
  17. adjust a monitor's angle for centered vision and comfortable neck position

    Windows

  18. identify the parts of a window (title bar, icon, name, sizing buttons)
  19. identify the menu bar
  20. use the mouse to select menu items
  21. create a new folder
  22. name and rename a folder or document
  23. display the contents of a folder with various Views
  24. resize windows

    Keyboarding

  25. type 10 wpm (2 errors) using the touch typing system
  26. use number, caps, and scroll lock correctly
  27. use arrow keys to navigate on a page

    Applications

  28. identify the difference between a document and an application
  29. launch an application then create a new document
  30. save a document to a specified folder
  31. open a document from within an application
  32. open a document from within a folder
  33. save to a new location (different folder or volume)

    Word Processing

  34. select text using a mouse
  35. format styles
  36. change styles
  37. print a document

    File Management

  38. navigate to My Documents from the desktop through My Computer
  39. develop a logical hierarchical file system with at least triple nesting within My Documents
  40. drag items from one folder to another

    Internet

  41. identify the major web browsers
  42. when given a URL open a web page
  43. can follow a series of web links from page to page
  44. can search for information
  45. can send and receive letters using email software
  46. can attach a file to email
  47. can retrieve an attachment
